In the last five years Charter School enrollments across the United States have increased 11.68% while traditional school district education enrollment rates have decreased 3.89% in the same time period. Why are parents and students more frequently leaning towards charter schools over district education options?
I work with charter schools for a living, and here are three reasons why I think charter schools are becoming increasingly popular.
#1 Personalized Learning: Charter schools have the option of specializing in areas of their choice. Some schools focus on apprenticeships, trade school programs, STEM, arts, and language immersion, just to name a few. This type of specialization helps students excel in areas they are interested in and prepares them for college and/or careers.
#2 Flexible Programs: There are many charter schools who offer traditional classrooms but alternative approaches are becoming increasingly common: Virtual, hybrid, college campus high schools, lab based programs, and even virtual reality programs are just a few of the offerings from charter schools across the country. This flexibility gives parents opportunities for their children who struggle in a traditional school setting or crave more than a traditional classroom.
#3 Higher Standards of Education: Charter schools typically have smaller student bodies, which naturally leads to smaller class sizes. This allows for additional opportunities for personalized education, with increased instructional time and individualized support for students. Parents, teachers, and even students all contribute meaningfully in the school community. This sense of connection helps students feel valued and supported, often contributing to improved academic performance.
Each student, with their parents and family, has unique needs, talents, dreams, and priorities. Charter schools offer families options that are personalized and geared towards the goals of each student. It’s no surprise that charter schools are gaining popularity, they empower students to reach their full potential in ways that traditional models may not always accommodate.
