The Inaugural Charter Connect Leadership Summit

Towards the end of last summer, we began tossing around the idea of hosting a partner retreat—something that would bring together our partners not just to collaborate, but to truly connect. What started as a simple idea came to life in early March, when Charter Connect hosted 11 of our strategic partners at Villa Azul in the Dominican Republic for our very first Leadership Summit.

Going into the week, no one—our team included—knew exactly what to expect. But what unfolded was something even better than we could have planned: an overwhelming success rooted in connection, growth, and shared purpose.

A Diverse Group, One Shared Mission

All 11 partners work within the charter school space in some capacity. From school leaders and charter organizations to background check companies and our own Charter Connect team, the group represented a wide range of expertise and perspectives. Many brought guests, bringing our total to 21 attendees.

What made the experience so unique was the diversity of the group—different roles, backgrounds, locations, and experiences. On paper, it could have gone either way. But in reality, it created the perfect environment for meaningful conversations, fresh ideas, and unexpected connections.

A Foundation Built on Growth

The summit was inspired by our annual employee retreats, where we center our time around learning and personal development. For this week, we focused on two impactful books: Leadership and Self-Deception and The Four Agreements. Both are foundational to our culture at Charter Connect and provided a powerful framework for our group discussions.

Throughout the week, we held intentional conversations that built on the themes of these books—encouraging reflection, self-awareness, and growth. While these discussions were a key part of the experience, what we gained went far beyond any one topic or takeaway.

Connection Beyond the Conference Room

Of course, it wasn’t all structured discussion. We also made time for shared experiences—exploring the local area, enjoying a city tour of Puerto Plata, playing golf, going deep-sea fishing, and taking a catamaran ride.

It was during these moments that the real magic happened. Conversations flowed naturally. Barriers came down. People connected not just as professionals, but as individuals.

This group—who may never have crossed paths otherwise—found common ground, shared challenges, and supported one another in ways that felt genuine and lasting. One guest even referred to us as “Charter Cousins,” and honestly, there’s no better way to describe it.

The True Impact

The greatest success of the Leadership Summit wasn’t the location, the activities, or even the content—it was the relationships that were formed.

Throughout the week, people openly shared ideas, asked for advice, and learned from each other’s experiences. Whether during a structured discussion or while sailing along the coast, these organic conversations sparked new perspectives, strengthened partnerships, and even laid the groundwork for future collaborations.

What started as a retreat quickly became something more: a community.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on our first Leadership Summit, one thing is clear—this is just the beginning. The connections made, the ideas shared, and the relationships built will continue to grow long after the trip ended.

We’re already looking forward to the next one.

If you’re interested in being part of a future Charter Connect Leadership Summit, we’d love to connect.
