Real Growth Starts with Real Conversations: How Culture Topics Are Transforming Our Team

Do you ever pause to ask yourself: Are we truly growing? As a school, as a company, as a culture? Do you have intentional steps in place to grow both individually and collectively?

At Charter Connect, growth is not just a goal. It’s built into our DNA. One of the most impactful ways we invest in growth is through what we call “Culture Topics.” Others might describe them as professional development discussions, mindset work, or intellectual exploration. Regardless of the label, the intention is the same: to become better. We believe that the more you strive to grow as an individual, the more your organization will flourish. This simple concept has genuinely changed the way we do things.

So, What Is a Culture Topic?

You might be wondering: What exactly is a Culture Topic? When do we do them? How does it work? And do we really have time for this? These are the kinds of questions that come up when you start to rethink your workplace culture and priorities.

At Charter Connect, Culture Topics are guided group discussions centered around ideas that challenge us, inspire us, and help us grow. They can take many forms: a workplace article, a TED Talk, a movie clip, a team quiz, or a leadership concept. We dedicate 20 to 30 minutes each week in our virtual team meetings to dive into these topics.

What makes this process even more powerful is that the discussion leader rotates each week. Everyone gets a chance to choose a topic that resonates with them and guide the conversation. This not only brings fresh perspectives to the table but also empowers team members to lead in their own unique way. It opens the floor for participation and insight, even from those who might not typically speak up.

Why We Do It—and Why It Works

The purpose behind Culture Topics is simple: growth.

  • Growth as individuals.

  • Growth as a team.

  • Growth as a company.

When someone shares a TED Talk on leadership, you start to see what qualities they value in a great leader. When we discuss a scene from a movie, you discover what stood out to someone else and how you might have missed that moment entirely. A quiz about communication or conflict styles suddenly becomes a tool to help us collaborate better. Even a simple game reveals our teammates’ competitive sides and why that drive makes them a great asset to the team.

These conversations may seem small, but they create ripple effects. You start to understand how your teammates think, what motivates them, how they respond under pressure, and what makes them come alive. And those insights? They show up in team dynamics, client relationships, problem-solving, and even creativity.

The Bigger Picture

Sure, it might feel like one more thing on the to-do list. But what if we paused for a second? What if we gave ourselves permission to step back from the busy schedules and just focused on the people?

What if we prioritized connection over checklists?

What if we made space to truly know our teammates, not just their job titles, but their values, quirks, motivators, and strengths?

And what if by doing that, our organization didn’t slow down, but actually became better in every way?

That’s exactly what we’ve seen. When people grow, the organization grows. When individuals feel seen, heard, and valued, they step up in ways you never imagined. They communicate more clearly. They lead with confidence. They build better relationships. They care more deeply.

So here’s our challenge to you: take the time. Create space. Try a Culture Topic. Let your team lead, share, and surprise you. When you commit to it, the results will speak for themselves.

Because when you invest in your people, everything changes. And everything gets better.
